Checkpoints, not overwrites
Every backup produces a new checkpoint. Older ones stay restorable until you prune them.
Fermata
Fermata is a command-line backup tool for Sia. Each run saves an encrypted checkpoint of a directory, and only data that isn't already stored gets uploaded.
$ cargo install sia-fermataEvery backup produces a new checkpoint. Older ones stay restorable until you prune them.
Files are deduplicated by content hash, so the next backup of the same folder only uploads what changed.
Restore a whole checkpoint into an empty directory, or pull out a single file by its path. Fermata never overwrites an existing file.
Check the hash of every file in a checkpoint, see what changed between two checkpoints, and keep only the newest few.
If a file changes while Fermata is reading it, the backup stops instead of saving a half-written copy.
Runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Checkpoints restore on the same operating system family that created them.
Installs Fermata from crates.io. Cargo builds it on your machine, so it needs a stable Rust toolchain and a C compiler.
$ cargo install sia-fermataConnect Fermata to your Sia Storage account and generate a recovery phrase. Keep the phrase somewhere safe. To log in with it later, run the same command without --new.
$ fermata login --newThe first argument names the backup, the second is the directory. Run it again with the same name to add a new checkpoint.
$ fermata backup home ~Restore the newest checkpoint into an empty directory. Pass --checkpoint for an older one, or --path for a single file.
$ fermata restore home /tmp/restoreThen follow the quickstart from step 2.
On macOS and Linux.
$ brew install siafoundation/sia/fermataOn Debian and Ubuntu. On Ubuntu, replace debian with ubuntu in both addresses.
$ sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings$ curl -fsSL https://linux.sia.tech/debian/gpg | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/siafoundation.asc > /dev/null$ echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/siafoundation.asc] https://linux.sia.tech/debian $(. /etc/os-release && echo "$VERSION_CODENAME") main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/siafoundation.list$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install sia-fermataEach zip holds the fermata binary from the latest release. Unzip it, put it on your PATH, then follow the quickstart from step 2.
Every Sia Storage account starts with 50GB free.
