s3d

Use your S3 tools with Sia.

s3d is a self-hosted gateway that speaks the S3 API. Anything that talks to S3 can store files on Sia without changes, and every file is encrypted before it leaves your machine.

Install on Debian or Ubuntu
$ curl -fsSL https://sia.storage/s3d/install.sh | sh
Demo

An S3 endpoint on your own machine

Works with

  • rclone
  • Cyberduck
  • Nextcloud
  • Synology Hyper Backup
  • Arq
  • AWS CLI

Encrypted before upload

Files are encrypted on your machine. Sia Storage and the storage providers only ever see encrypted data.

Straight to the network

Uploads and downloads go directly between s3d and 30 storage providers on the Sia network, not through our servers.

Small files packed together

s3d buffers objects on disk and packs small ones into shared slabs before upload, so a folder of tiny files doesn't waste space.

Large files in parts

Multipart uploads take parts of up to 5 GiB, with up to 10,000 parts per upload.

Runs where you do

macOS, Linux, Windows, or Docker. Open source under the MIT license.

Quickstart

Four commands from install to a running S3 endpoint on Debian or Ubuntu.

  1. 1

    Install

    On Debian and Ubuntu, the script adds the Sia apt repository and installs s3d as a system service. On macOS or Windows, see the other ways to install below.

    Terminal
    $ curl -fsSL https://sia.storage/s3d/install.sh | sh
  2. 2

    Log in

    Link s3d to your Sia Storage account. Leave the recovery phrase blank to generate a new one, then approve the connection in your browser.

    Terminal
    $ sudo s3d login
  3. 3

    Create credentials

    Create an S3 user for your apps and an access key pair for it. The secret key is only shown once.

    Terminal
    $ sudo s3d users create alice && sudo s3d keys create alice
  4. 4

    Start the gateway

    This starts s3d now and on every boot. The S3 API listens on http://localhost:8000. Use it as the endpoint in any S3 client, with the keys from the last step.

    Terminal
    $ sudo systemctl enable --now s3d

Install with a package manager

Then follow the quickstart from step 2 without sudo, and start the gateway by running s3d.

Homebrew

On macOS and Linux. Homebrew builds s3d from source, so the first install can take a few minutes.

Terminal
$ brew install siafoundation/sia/s3d

apt

On Debian and Ubuntu. On Ubuntu, replace debian with ubuntu in both addresses.

Terminal
$ sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings
$ curl -fsSL https://linux.sia.tech/debian/gpg | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/siafoundation.asc > /dev/null
$ echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/siafoundation.asc] https://linux.sia.tech/debian $(. /etc/os-release && echo "$VERSION_CODENAME") main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/siafoundation.list
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install sia-s3d

Download a binary

Each zip holds the s3d binary from the latest release. Unzip it, put it on your PATH, then follow the quickstart from step 2 without sudo, and start the gateway by running s3d.
